These are confusing and troubling times, but you are not alone. These trials are temporary. Ask Jesus to come into your life in your words or recite this simple prayer:

I never knew you Jesus, or I ignored you. I  admit that I am reaching out now because things in the world are getting tougher and I am afraid. I heard that you are merciful and will accept me as I am. I have been a sinner, and I am sorry. I am grateful for and thank you for your sacrifice on the cross. Please forgive me and come into my life in my time of need. I am ready to do your will instead of mine. Amen.

THE APOSTLES JOURNEY
PROOF OF THE CHRIST

Ask yourself now and again after reading and considering their stories:

Did these men know Jesus?

Did they witness and perform miracles including the raising of the

dead?

Did the believe Christ was the Son of God (God Incarnate as a Man)?

All except two of the original apostles gave their lives to spread the Good News of Christ’s sacrifice and teachings, and to share the miracles they had witnessed. Nonbelievers cannot seem to grasp the significance of this.

Christianity did not spread across seven continents in a vacuum. The apostles didn’t travel the known world, giving their lives to spout dogma. Such thinking should be absurdity to all reasonable women and men. Yet hundreds of thousands were martyred, and Christianity became the world’s largest religion, while many continue to view Jesus as some sort of philosopher.

***

The apostle Peter was crucified upside down by the Romans. They were going to do it the regular way, but he begged them to do something different because he felt unworthy of suffering the exact fate of Jesus.

Bartholomew was whipped mercilessly and skinned alive. Let me reiterate that: he was skinned alive. And yet, he did not deny the teachings of his “philosopher.”

Andrew was also whipped, nearly to death. His tormentors stopped the beating because they didn’t want him dying too quickly. He lived for two more days tied to an X-shaped cross. What did he do during those days on the cross? Did he beg to be let down? Did he deny his “philosopher”? No, he continued preaching the Good News.

James was sentenced to death for spreading his belief in Christ. While waiting for his execution, he witnessed to his Roman guard, who was so moved by James’ faith that he asked to be martyred as well. James and the Roman guard were beheaded side by side.

Some locals tossed James the Younger off a cliff after he refused to deny Christ. He survived the fall, so they beat him and threw stones at him. When that failed to kill him, they bashed his head in with a club.

Thomas was stabbed with spears and burned alive. Matthew was done in by sword in Ethiopia.

And so it went for these brave men. Even many of the later apostles, most notably Mark and Paul, who never knew Jesus in human form, ended up martyred for their own great faith. Mark went to Alexandria to tell the Egyptians about Christ, the things he’d learned, and the miracles he’d witnessed. The Egyptians welcomed him by tying him to a couple of horses and dragging him down the street until he was dead. And Paul, responsible for turning so many to Christ, was beaten, imprisoned, exiled, tortured, and finally beheaded by the Roman Emperor Nero.

***

These men were either insane or had seen things to bolster their faith to an extreme that could not be denied. Had they all been insane, it would have been some sort of strange, mass hysteria or hallucination, unshakable in so many even through the horrific torture, unparalleled in the annals of psychiatry, science, or any other known history.

The idea is ridiculous. There is only one truth here. These men gave their lives because they witnessed and practiced miracles, speaking to God in the Spirit or after the return from the dead of their friend and teacher, Jesus, in the flesh. And it was a shame their deaths have to be ignored by even one man, let alone the billions of skeptics who question their sacrifices.

You Over Me

Lord Jesus, let me know myself and know You, and desire nothing save only You.
Let me hate myself and love You.
Let me do everything for the sake of You.
Let me humble myself and exalt You.
Let me think of nothing except You.
Let me die to myself and live in You.
Let me accept whatever happens as from You.
Let me banish self and follow You, and ever desire to follow You.
Let me fly from myself and take refuge in You,
That I may deserve to be defended by You.
Let me fear for myself.
Let me fear You, and let me be among those who are chosen by You.
Let me distrust myself and put my trust in You.
Let me be willing to obey for the sake of You.
Let me cling to nothing save only to You,
And let me be poor because of You.
Look upon me, that I may love You.
Call me that I may see You, and for ever enjoy You. Amen.

PRAYERS FOR THESE TROUBLING TIMES

You can always feel free to speak your mind to Jesus and He will listen. But if you are unsure of what to say exactly, here are a few great prayers to get you started:

Dear Heavenly Father, I feel in my heart that you might be real, but my mind fills me with doubt. Please help me find the path to you. My heart longs to know that you’re with me. Open my ears and my eyes for signs of you. I want to feel the love and peace that comes from knowing you. I pray this in Jesus’s name. Amen.

Dear Lord, I’m struggling with [name your struggle]. My heart is weighed down with anxiety, frustration, anger [name your emotions]. Please help me turn this over to you. I can’t fix it. I want to trust you to handle it. Give me the strength to let go and accept the outcome, whatever it may be. I ask this in Jesus’s name. Amen.

Dear God, [name of sick person] is sick and I’m scared. The prognosis is frightening and I don’t know what to do or where to turn. Please intervene with healing. I know it’s possible. Give him/her and me the strength to handle whatever comes our way. I pray this in the name of your son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

PRAYERS WORTH KNOWING

The Lord’s Prayer –
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
and forgive us our debts and we forgive
our debtors,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil,
for thine is the kingdom and the power
and the glory, forever. Amen.

Matthew 6:9-13

Twenty-Third Psalm –

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff–they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
